Where Does the Tribulation Come From?

The Tribulation is rooted in Daniel 9:24–27 — one of the most precise prophetic passages in Scripture. The angel Gabriel tells Daniel that 70 "weeks" (sevens of years = 490 years total) are decreed for Israel. The first 69 weeks were fulfilled exactly, ending with the crucifixion of Jesus. The 70th week — the final 7 years — was paused and still awaits fulfillment.

That final week is the Tribulation. It begins when "he" (the Antichrist) "confirms a covenant with many for one week." The moment that covenant is signed, the prophetic clock restarts and the 7-year countdown to Christ's return begins.

Exactly 7 Years — 2,520 Days

Daniel describes it as one "week" of years — seven years on the biblical prophetic calendar of 360 days per year = 2,520 days total. The Bible divides this into two equal halves confirmed multiple ways:

• 1"A time, times, and half a time" = 3½ years (Daniel 7:25, 12:7; Revelation 12:14)
• 2"Forty-two months" = 3½ years (Revelation 11:2, 13:5)
• 3"1,260 days" = 3½ years (Revelation 11:3, 12:6)

The midpoint — when the Antichrist enters the rebuilt Temple and declares himself God — divides the Tribulation into a first half (relatively less severe) and the Great Tribulation (the catastrophic second half).

The Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls of Revelation

Revelation unfolds the Tribulation through three sets of seven judgments each, escalating in severity. The Seals set the stage. The Trumpets intensify the destruction. The Bowls are the final, undiluted wrath of God poured out on the earth.

The Final 3½ Years — The Worst in Human History

Jesus gave the Great Tribulation its name and described it in stark terms: "For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now — and never to be equaled again. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive." (Matthew 24:21–22)

It begins at the midpoint of the 7 years with the Abomination of Desolation — when the Antichrist enters the rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem, stops the sacrifices, sets up an image of himself, and demands worship as God (Daniel 9:27, Matthew 24:15, 2 Thessalonians 2:4). This is the decisive act that triggers the final bowl judgments.

During this period: the Antichrist enforces the Mark of the Beast globally, the False Prophet deceives the nations, God's two witnesses prophesy in Jerusalem, and 144,000 Jewish believers spread the gospel to the whole world (Revelation 7, 11, 13–14).

How the Tribulation Ends

The Tribulation ends not with humanity's destruction but with Christ's rescue. As the armies of the nations converge on Israel in the Valley of Megiddo (Armageddon), Jesus Christ returns physically, visibly, and gloriously to earth.

What Current Events Tell Us

Many prophecy teachers believe the first four Seals of Revelation have opened simultaneously for the first time in history. The White Horse (global peace movement, rising world leader), the Red Horse (wars in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, Iran), the Black Horse (the Hormuz closure and global food and oil shocks of 2025–2026), and the Pale Horse (death from war, famine, and disease across multiple continents) all appear to be active at once.

Some believe the 7-year Tribulation began January 20, 2025, based on patterns in Daniel's 70-week prophecy. The definitive confirmation will be the signing of a formal 7-year covenant involving Israel — the event Daniel 9:27 identifies as the Tribulation's starting gun.

Whether we are in it or approaching it, Scripture is clear: these events will happen. The question is whether you will be ready.

What Happens to Believers?

The Rapture is the event in which Jesus catches up ("raptures") believers to meet Him in the air before or during the Tribulation (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17, 1 Corinthians 15:51–52). The main debate is when it happens relative to the Tribulation — Pre-Tribulation (before it starts), Mid-Tribulation (at the 3½-year mark), or Post-Tribulation (at the end).

Pre-Tribulation is the most widely held view among evangelical Christians today, based on the promise that believers are "not destined for wrath" (1 Thessalonians 5:9) and that God removes His people before judgment (as with Noah and Lot). Whatever the timing, the promise is the same: those who trust Christ will be with Him.

What the Bible Says About Being Ready

Revelation 7 reveals that even during the Tribulation, God saves people. A "great multitude that no one could count" from every nation comes to faith in Christ during this period. But it will come at enormous cost — many will be martyred for refusing the Mark of the Beast (Revelation 6:9–11, 20:4).

The Bible's consistent message: now is the best time to trust Christ. Before the Tribulation, before the Mark, before the choice becomes a death sentence. The door of grace is open. The moment you believe in Jesus Christ — that He died for your sins and rose from the dead — you are saved and sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13–14).
