Where are the dead right now? What is heaven, really? What is hell? And where does every soul end up? The Bible answers all of it.
"I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die." — John 11:25
Death is not the end of existence — it is a transition. The Bible teaches that every person who has ever died is conscious right now, in one of two places, awaiting the final resurrection and judgment.
When a Christian dies, their spirit immediately goes to be with Jesus Christ. This is not soul sleep or unconsciousness — Paul describes it as being "away from the body and at home with the Lord." They are at rest, in the presence of God, fully aware, waiting for the resurrection of their bodies at the return of Christ.
Before the death and resurrection of Jesus, the righteous dead went to a place called "Abraham's bosom" or "Paradise" — a section of Sheol/Hades where the faithful waited in comfort, separated from the wicked by an uncrossable chasm. When Christ rose from the dead, He led these captives into God's presence. They are now with the Lord alongside New Testament believers.
Those who died without faith in God are currently in Hades — a place of conscious torment and separation from God. This is not yet the Lake of Fire, which is the final eternal destination. Hades is a temporary holding place until the Great White Throne Judgment, at which point Hades itself will be thrown into the Lake of Fire.
Certain fallen angels who sinned in a specific way before the flood are not roaming free — they are currently bound in Tartarus, a place of darkness, awaiting judgment. Satan and his other demons are still active on earth until they are bound at Christ's return.
The Bible uses several distinct words for hell — each describing a different aspect or phase of eternal judgment. Hell is not a metaphor. Jesus spoke of it more than anyone else in Scripture.
The Greek word for the realm of the dead. Currently holds the unrighteous deadin conscious torment. Temporary — it will be emptied at the final judgment and thrown into the Lake of Fire.
The word Jesus used most for hell — named after the Valley of Hinnom outside Jerusalem where trash burned constantly. It describes the final, permanent place of judgment:the Lake of Fire. Unquenchable. Eternal.
The final destination of Satan, the Antichrist, the False Prophet, death itself, Hades, and every person whose name is not found in the Book of Life. It is described as eternal conscious torment — not annihilation. The second death. Completely and permanently cut off from God, from love, from light, from peace — forever.
Jesus also describes hell as "outer darkness" — not just fire, but total exclusion from light, warmth, relationship, and the presence of God. There is weeping and gnashing of teeth: not despair that leads to repentance, but anguish that leads nowhere. The door is permanently shut.
Heaven is not clouds and harps. The Bible describes a physical, glorious, eternal reality — a place of perfected creation where God dwells with His people in person. It is the restoration of everything that was lost, and more.
Scripture describes three heavens: the sky, outer space, and the third heaven — the dwelling place of God. This is where Jesus ascended after His resurrection. It is where believers go when they die. It is real, it is now, and it is above the physical universe.
After His return at Armageddon, Jesus Christ will reign on earth for 1,000 years. Satan will be bound. Believers who survived the tribulation and those resurrected will reign with Christ. Earth will be renewed — peace, justice, and the physical presence of the King. This is not heaven yet — it is the foretaste, the transitional reign, before the eternal state.
After the millennium and the Great White Throne Judgment, God creates a new heaven and a new earth — the old, sin-stained creation passes away. The New Jerusalem, described in stunning detail, comes down from heaven. God Himself will live with His people. There is no more death, no more tears, no more pain. We will see His face. We will reign forever.
The New Jerusalem is a real city. Its dimensions: 1,400 miles long, wide, and tall — a cube or pyramid of staggering scale. Walls of jasper. Streets of pure gold, like transparent glass. Twelve gates of pearl, each a single pearl. The river of life flowing from the throne of God. The tree of life bearing fruit every month. And no need for the sun — God's glory is the light.
From the moment of death through eternity — here is the complete biblical sequence for both the believer and the unbeliever.
Everything on this page is where things are headed — but none of it has to be your story. The whole reason Jesus came, died, and rose again was so that the Lake of Fire would not be your destination. The path of the believer is available to anyone who turns to Him.
