The Bible describes this figure in more detail than almost any other prophetic character. He is not a myth, not a metaphor, and not yet here. Here is exactly what Scripture says about who he is, what he does, and how he ends.
"The man of lawlessness… will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God." — 2 Thessalonians 2:3–4
The Bible never calls him "the Antichrist" in Revelation — that term comes from John's letters. He is described under many titles across multiple books, each revealing a different dimension of his character.
Paul explicitly says the Antichrist will not be revealed until the restrainer is removed. He is not currently on the world stage in his true identity. Many figures throughout history have been identified as candidates — Nero, Napoleon, Hitler, various popes — and all were wrong. The real Antichrist will only become fully apparent after the Rapture.
That said, Daniel gives specific geographic and political clues. He rises from among nations connected to the old Roman Empire (Daniel 7, 9). He comes as a peacemaker. He has a supernatural encounter or apparent death and recovery. When these pieces align on a single figure after the Rapture, it will be unmistakable.
The three figures of Revelation 12–13 form a deliberate counterfeit of the Trinity. Satan counterfeits God the Father. The Antichrist counterfeits Jesus Christ — the son who receives authority, dies (apparently), is resurrected, and is worshipped. The False Prophet counterfeits the Holy Spirit — he never draws attention to himself, only to the Beast, just as the Spirit points to Christ.
Understanding this structure reveals something important: the entire system of the Antichrist is a deception built to look like salvation. It will be convincing. The only defense is knowing the real thing well enough to recognize the counterfeit.
Whatever happens during the tribulation — however powerful the Antichrist becomes, however complete his control appears — the ending is already written. He is thrown into the lake of fire. Jesus reigns. Every saint who refused to worship the Beast reigns with Him for a thousand years. The story is not a cliffhanger.
